Caffeine’s Effects on Your Veins

Many of us turn to a cup of coffee to wake up in the morning, right? Or, maybe you take a pre-workout drink to fuel your workout? Or, maybe you grab a Diet Coke to give you a pick-me-up at 2 p.m. at the office? No matter the reason, you’re grabbing these drinks because they’re filled with caffeine. Caffeine is known for its ability to “wake” a person up and increase alertness.

How is caffeine able to give you this energy? Caffeine stimulates the nervous system and constricts blood vessels. When consumed in moderate amounts, caffeine is safe. If overconsumed, a person can experience high blood pressure, poor circulation and the narrowing of blood vessels.

You feel more awake when you consume caffeine because caffeine attaches itself to your adenosine receptors, which usually dilate your brain’s blood vessels. Because of the caffeine, the blood vessels constrict, which is known as vasoconstriction. When vasoconstriction occurs in the brain, the pituitary gland reacts as if it’s in an emergency and releases adrenaline, which leads to an increased heart rate and slower blood flow. In fact, according to a study, caffeine users can experience 27 percent lower blood flow.

If you consume a lot of caffeine, you’re putting unnecessary stress onto the venous system as a result of the blood flow changes. When there is stress or less blood flow in the veins, the veins have a great risk of becoming diseased. Varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can both occur from vasoconstriction. Veins can enlarge, inflame, swell, and blood can begin clotting when put under pressure.

Up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day is considered safe for most adults. This amount translates to 4 cups of brewed coffee, 10 cans of cola, or two “energy shot” drinks. If you have high blood pressure, try to avoid caffeine.
